Asbestos Cancer

Asbestos is a fiber made from minerals. For several decades spanning the 20th century it was one of the most common materials used in the construction of commercial buildings
and homes. It was designed for two particular uses, it was used as an effective form of insulation, to keep the structures protected from extreme temperatures. It was also thought to be an effective fire retardant. But while these uses were valuable, they had a terrible price. For asbestos was found to be the cause of many health problems. To those who were exposed to it, many illnesses developed, the most common was lung disease, specifically, various forms of what is now called asbestos cancers.

It seems that breathing the material was in fact taxic. The asbestos, when airborne for any reason, found its way into the lungs and lodged there creating the illnesses.

There have been several large health studies on the effects of asbestos on humans and all of them are in agreement that asbestos poses serious health risks. The studies all indicated that asbestos was the main cause behind numerous cases of lung cancer, asbestosis, a condition where the lungs are scarred with the fibrous tissue asbestos creates, and mesothelioma, which is cancer of the chest and abdominal cavities.

Experts believe that the various forms of asbestos cancer increase with the amount of exposure to the fibers. The risk also increases dramatically if those exposed also smoke.

Because of the high health risk, and the many high profile legal conflicts that have arisen between plaintiffs who became sick and those who manufactured and installed the product, asbestos has not been used as a building material for two decades. But it is still present in older homes and buildings. Experts feel that asbestos is most dangerous when its fibers are moved or cut, so they advise owners of these older structures to leave asbestos that appears in good condition alone.

If removal is warranted for any reason, then expert contractors should be employed to assist in the process. It is also important for those with asbestos in their homes or offices to periodically check on the condition to be assured the material has not deteriorated.

If sick with any of the above conditions it is crucial to check with a medical expert to see what steps might be taken to regain a state of health.
